Quarter Notes

Match a rhythm built from quarter and half notes.

Listen, compare, then practise

A quarter note lasts one beat in 4/4. A half note lasts two. Match the spacing of the attacks, not the length of the sound.

A · Worked example

Pattern D · attacks at 1, 2, 3 in quarter-note units

11234>112

Follow each filled block from left to right. A block spanning two numbered beats has one attack, then one beat of continued duration.

Count 4/4 at 80 BPM. Attacks occur at 1, 2, 3 in quarter-note beat units. Rests take time without an attack.

B · Compare the difference

Pattern D · attacks at 1, 2, 3, 4 in quarter-note units

11234>1111

Compare the attack spacing, especially the gap after the first sound. Four quarter notes and two half notes occupy the same four-beat bar.

Count 4/4 at 80 BPM. Attacks occur at 1, 2, 3, 4 in quarter-note beat units. Rests take time without an attack.

Blocks show durations in quarter-note units. R marks a rest; > marks an accented attack. Numbers below each bar are quarter-note positions, which differ from the main beat in 6/8.

Check the idea: A half note does not call for a second attack on its second beat.

1 · Guided practice

Count all four beats and point only when a new sound begins. Match that sequence to one strip before checking the answer.

2 · Independent practice

Choose each strip from its attacks. Use the full bar length to reject a tempting option with the long note in the wrong place.

3 · New-question check

For two fresh questions, describe the gap pattern first, then choose. Check whether the half note appears at the beginning or end.

Each session starts with two guided questions, then your chosen practice set, followed by two new questions at a different tempo. First answers, same-question retries, and the final check have separate results.

If this feels difficult

  • Every numbered beat sounds like a new note. Separate the regular counting pulse from the sounds you hear. Steady Beat
  • The two-beat gap gets shortened. Speak the silent second count before moving to the next attack. Quarter Notes
